What is Oseltamivir used for Oseltamivir is a medication that belongs to a class of medications called “influenza neuraminidase inhibitors”. It is used for the treatment of influenza in patients 1 year of age and older who have been experiencing symptoms for no more than 48 hours and to prevent influenza in patients who are 1 year of age and older. Influenza is a respiratory viral infection that is also known as the flu, it is manifested by signs and symptoms like, fever, chills, sore throat, cough, stuffy or runny nose, headaches, fatigue and body aches. Do not take Oseltamivir If you are allergic to Oseltamivir, or any of the ingredients in this medicine. Tell your doctor about the allergy and what signs you had. Warnings and precautions Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you develop allergic reactions such as shortness of breath, skin rash, swelling of the face or neck, decreased blood pressure and dizziness. This medication is not a substitute for the annual influenza vaccine. This medication may increase the risk of neuropsychiatric signs. Talk to your doctor if you experience signs like behavior changes or confusion. Possible side effects Possible side effects of Oseltamivir are allergic reactions like rash, behavior changes or confusion, nausea and vomiting. Other medicines and Oseltamivir Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medications. Intranasal live attenuated influenza vaccine (flu vaccine given through the nose) should not be administered until 2 days after stopping Oseltamivir. Do not take oseltamivir until at least two weeks after receiving the live attenuated influenza vaccine, unless your doctor recommends to. How to take Oseltamivir To treat the flu: Take oseltamivir orally twice a day for 5 days, once in the morning and once in the evening. To prevent the flu if someone at your home has the flu: Take oseltamivir orally once a day for 10 days or for as long as prescribed by your doctor. To prevent the flu if you were exposed to the flu due to an outbreak in your community: Take oseltamivir orally once a day for up to 6 weeks. Follow your specific doctor’s directions. Make sure to start your medication as soon as your flu signs start or soon after your exposure to the virus. Contact your doctor if you do not feel better 48 hours after starting your medication or if you start experiencing new signs or symptoms. Make sure to take the complete treatment even if you start feeling better. Take capsule with or without food. If you experience stomach ache, you can take the medication with milk or a light meal. Take capsule with a full glass of water. Take at the same time every day. Do not take for more or less than prescribed by your doctor. Do not stop taking your medication prior to the end of prescribed duration even if you start feeling better. How to store Oseltamivir Store capsules at room temperature (25°C). Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Do not use beyond the expiry date mentioned on the box. Keep medication in its original pack to protect it from moisture and light. Do not use damaged capsules. Do not dispose medication in the wastewater or household waste.
