Tranexamic acid 650 mg Tablets
What Tranexamic acid is used for:
Tranexamic acid is a medicine that is used for the treatment of cyclic heavy menstrual bleeding (period) when it can affect your quality of life by getting in the way of leisure, social, and physical activities.
This medicine does not have any hormones.
This medicine has shown its ability to decrease the amount of blood lost during your monthly period by around one-third, but it does not completely stop your period.
Tranexamic acid is taken only during your menses and should not be taken to treat pre-menstrual symptoms (symptoms that happen before the start of your period).
In addition, this medicine does not have any effect on your fertility and should not be taken as birth control.
Tranexamic acid does not give you any protection against sexually transmitted diseases (diseases that you may get from unprotected sex).
This medicine has not been studied in teenagers younger than 18 years of age.
Do not take Tranexamic acid:
If you are allergic to Tranexamic acid, or any of the ingredients in this medicine.
Tell your doctor about the allergy and what signs you had.
If you have been told that you are at risk of developing blood clots.
If you currently have or have previously had a blood clot.
Warnings and Precautions:
Stop the medication right away and talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you develop allergic reactions such as shortness of breath, skin rash, swelling of the face or neck, decreased blood pressure and dizziness.
Make sure that you tell your doctor before taking this medicine if you currently have or have previously had a blood clot or been told that you are at risk of developing a blood clot.
Using products that contain hormones along with tranexamic acid may increase the risk of developing a heart attack, blood clot or stroke. Make sure that you tell your doctor before taking this medicine if you are using a contraceptive method (birth control) that has hormones (e.g. patch, birth control pill, vaginal ring or intrauterine device).
Talk to your doctor before starting this medicine if the time between the start of your periods is less than 21 days or more than 35 days or if you have any other medical problems.
Talk to your doctor before starting this medicine if you are pregnant, plan to get pregnant, think you may be pregnant, breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed.
This medicine may cause eye changes. Stop taking Tranexamic acid right away if you develop any eye problems, report the problem to your doctor who will refer you to an eye specialist for an eye exam.
The risk of developing blood clots may be higher when this medicine is taken with some other medicines like hormonal contraceptives (birth control), medicines that increase blood clotting and some medicines used for the treatment of leukemia.
Tranexamic acid may increase the risk of developing brain edema and cerebral infarction (stroke) in women with subarachnoid hemorrhage (type of stroke caused by bleeding in the surrounding of the brain).
Possible side effects:
Possible side effects include allergic reactions, blood clots (especially when used with other medicines that may interact with Tranexamic acid) and eye changes.
Most common side effects include headache, anemia, back ache, fatigue, abdominal pain, pain in your joints or muscles and sinus or nasal problems.
Other medicines and Tranexamic acid:
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medications including prescription medicines, over the counter medicines, herbals, vitamins and supplements.
If you are taking birth control pills or other hormonal birth control.
If you are taking medicines used to help in blood clotting.
If you are taking medicines used to help in breaking blood clots.
If you are taking medicines used to treat leukemia (type of blood cancer).
How to take Tranexamic acid:
The usual recommended dose is 2 tablets orally 3 times daily (e.g. in the morning, afternoon, evening) when period starts.
Your doctor may recommend a lower dose if you have kidney impairment.
Take your medication exactly as recommended by your healthcare provider.
Do not take this medicine until your period has begun.
This medicine should not be taken for more than 5 days in a row.
You should not use Tranexamic acid if you do not have your menstrual period.
Do not exceed 6 tablets of Tranexamic acid per day.
Take tablet with or without food.
This medicine is intended for oral use only.
Swallow the tablet whole. Do not chew or break the tablet.
How to store Tranexamic acid:
Keep out of the reach of children and pets
Store at room temperature (15°C – 30°C)
Do not use beyond the expiry date mentioned on the box
Do not dispose medication in the wastewater or household waste
