WHAT IS L-CET? L-Cet is an antihistamine that reduces the effects of the natural chemical histamine in the body. Histamine can produce symptoms of sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose. L-Cet is used to treat symptoms of year-round (perennial) allergies in adults and children who are at least 6 months old. It is also used to treat symptoms of seasonal allergies in adults and children who are at least 2 years old. L-Cet is also used to treat itching and swelling caused by chronic urticaria (hives) in adults and children who are at least 6 months old. More: https://www.ndrugs.com/?s=l-cet L-Cet is available as 2.5 mg/5 mL (0.5 mg/mL) oral solution and as 5 mg breakable (scored) tablets, allowing for the administration of 2.5 mg, if needed. L-Cet can be taken without regard to food consumption. Adults And Children 12 Years Of Age and Older The recommended dose of L-Cet is 5 mg (1 tablet or 2 teaspoons [10 mL] oral solution) once daily in the evening. Some patients may be adequately controlled by 2.5 mg (½ tablet or 1 teaspoon [5 mL] oral solution) once daily in the evening. Children 6 To 11 Years Of Age The recommended dose of L-Cet is 2.5 mg (½ tablet or 1 teaspoon [5 mL] oral solution) once daily in the evening. The 2.5 mg dose should not be exceeded because the systemic exposure with 5 mg is approximately twice that of adults. Children 6 Months To 5 Years Of Age The recommended initial dose of L-Cet is 1.25 mg (½ teaspoon oral solution) [2.5mL] once daily in the evening. Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction to L-Cet: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Stop using L-Cet and call your doctor at once if you have: • painful or difficult urination; • little or no urinating; • pain or fullness in your ear, hearing problems; • a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out; • fever; or • worsening allergy or urticaria symptoms. Common L-Cet side effects may include: • drowsiness, weakness; • feeling tired; • fever; • stuffy nose, sinus pain, sore throat, cough; • vomiting, diarrhea, constipation; • dry mouth; or • weight gain. Overdosage has been reported with L-Cet dihydrochloride. Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness in adults and initially agitation and restlessness, followed by drowsiness in children. There is no known specific antidote to L-Cet dihydrochloride. Should overdose occur, symptomatic or supportive treatment is recommended. L-Cet dihydrochloride is not effectively removed by dialysis, and dialysis will be ineffective unless a dialyzable agent has been concomitantly ingested. The acute maximal non-lethal oral dose of L-Cet was 240 mg/kg in mice (approximately 190 times the maximum recommended daily oral dose in adults, approximately 230 times the maximum recommended daily oral dose in children 6 to 11 years of age, and approximately 180 times the maximum recommended daily oral dose in children 6 months to 5 years of age on a mg/m2 basis). In rats the maximal non-lethal oral dose was 240 mg/kg (approximately 390 times the maximum recommended daily oral dose in adults, approximately 460 times the maximum recommended daily oral dose in children 6 to 11 years of age, and approximately 370 times the maximum recommended daily oral dose in children 6 months to 5 years of age on a mg/m2 basis). WHAT SHOULD I AVOID WHILE TAKING L-CET? This medication may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert. Drinking alcohol can increase certain side effects of L-Cet.
