How to Use:

There is no standard dosage regimen for Metformin XR in managing hyperglycemia for type 2 diabetes patients.
The dose should be personalized based on individual effectiveness and tolerance, without exceeding the maximum recommended daily dose.

Maximum Dose: 2000 mg per day for adults.

Administration:

Metformin XR is usually taken once daily with the evening meal.

Starting Dose: Begin at a low dose, gradually increasing to minimize gastrointestinal side effects and determine the minimum effective dose for glycemic control.

Dosage for Adults:

Initial Dose: 500 mg once daily with the evening meal.
Dose Adjustment: Increase by 500 mg weekly as needed, up to a maximum of 2000 mg once daily.
If 2000 mg once daily does not achieve glycemic control, a trial of 1000 mg twice daily may be considered.
For higher required doses, regular Metformin (not XR) can be used, up to 2550 mg daily, divided into smaller doses.
 

Warnings and Precautions:

Risk of Lactic Acidosis:
Metformin may cause a rare but severe condition known as lactic acidosis, especially in the presence of certain risk factors such as:

Kidney dysfunction
Uncontrolled diabetes
Severe infections
Liver problems
Dehydration
Stop taking Metformin and seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms of lactic acidosis, as it can lead to coma.

Symptoms include:

Vomiting
Stomach pain
Muscle cramps
Severe tiredness and feeling unwell
Difficulty breathing
Lowered body temperature or slow heartbeat
Risk of Hypoglycemia:
When combined with other diabetes medications, Metformin may increase the risk of hypoglycemia.

Symptoms include:

Weakness
Dizziness
Excessive sweating
Rapid heartbeat
Vision problems
Trouble concentrating
Solution: Eating or drinking something sugary can help relieve symptoms.
